INTRODUCTION TO COSMO’S GUIDE TO VEGETABLES

As a father and then later as a grandfather, I have been intrigued by the steadfast refusal of so many children to avoid eating certain vegetables and in some cases, anything green at all!  Their strepitous and annoying rejection to these foods has even made me wonder if there isn’t something genetically encoded in them to insure they won’t be eating something so notoriously dangerous to the well-being of the human race  as a piece of steamed broccoli.   My daughters once observed that this reaction might be a defense mechanism to protect them from eating large amounts of anything that might cause an allergic reaction.  Maybe she’s right.

Regardless of the origin of a distaste for vegetables in small children, the end result is that most of us as parents, do feed a little less of any vegetable to a crying, screaming, fit throwing little two and a half year old who spits out every offending mouthful.  Maybe they really do know what’s best and their reaction is just their way of telling us, to slow down and go easy on those disgusting peas!

Anyway, thanks to all of those scenes I have witnessed over the years, I came up with the idea of a playful review of a child’s dinning habits and their opinions of what is available to eat in the vegetable world.  So here we go, a book of light-hearted observations for my Grandchildren and Assorted Little Friends throughout the world who just might be wanting to learn English, improve their English, learn what an artichoke looks like or maybe just have another book to read before bedtime.

Of course, there are some didactic elements inside this little tome. Please don’t be put-off by some new or a not so common word you may find in this book.   I assure you that those little brains have all of the capacity needed for a couple of words more.    So, bear with me and don’t panic if a word appears that is not so common.  It’s all part of the fun and what fun it was for me to write.

Naturally, as this idea developed, I asked Caty Salazar, a wonderfully creative and funny young artist, to help me with the drawings, the book design and all of the efforts to bring it to a printed form.  I love the results and I hope you do too.
